Military Swords
For thousands of years, various armies and military groups have used swords both in battle and for ceremonial reasons. The use of swords in military campaigns can be traced all the way back to the Bronze Age, around 3300 BC. Many ethnic groups used swords as they were an effective means of subduing the enemy. One jab from a sword could surely mean death because of infection. Roman soldiers were some of the more well known military units that would carry large swords to use in military battle.
For thousands of years, swords were the main weapon in military conquests until the introduction of firearms. Still, soldiers carried swords as a last defense if they were out of ammunition or their gun suffered a breakdown. During the Civil War it was customary for soldiers to carry swords. During this time, hundreds of thousands of military swords were created and they were still used in battle, even though guns had become available.
Various types of military swords were used throughout history like the Gladius, broadswords, longswords as well as cutlasses. Each sword had its own specialty in military battle, but one thing is true; Military swords were effective and that's why they lasted for thousands of years.
